The Wi-Fi (Wireless-Fidelity) Alliance, a non-profit industry association that tests and certifies wireless products, recently announced that the development of its new specification, dubbed Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Wi-Fi Direct, is near completion, according to a press release by the Wi-Fi Alliance on October 14. The new specification will enable interoperability among all Wi-Fi devices without having to use routers or hotspots. This specification - which can support mobile phones, cameras, printers, notebook PCs, keyboards, and headphones - is expected to threaten Bluetooth. Furthermore, the Wi-Fi Alliance stated that it plans to begin certifying Wi-Fi devices based on this new specification in mid-2010 and Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Wi-Fi Direct devices will be available around the same time. These devices can either communicate on one-to-one basis or in small or larger groups simultaneously.
